Katherine Mansfield Essays - Bisexual Women, Fourth Way,

Katherine Mansfield Katherine Mansfield Katherine Mansfield, who lived from 1888 to 1923, is considered to be one of the most remarkable short story writers of her time. Using her life experiences as an inspiration for her short stories, Mansfield sculpted her ideas into masterful pieces of literary work. Mansfield's life was full of interesting experiences that shaped her outlook upon life. The diversity of friends and acquaintances Katherine Mansfield had over her lifetime also had a great influence on her career. Even as a child, Mansfield made decisions about her life that would create a path for her career to start on. Katherine Mansfield was born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp to Harold and Annie Dyer Beauchamp on October 14, 1888. The Beauchamp family called New Zealand their home. A Sea Voyage, written by the young Kathleen Beauchamp, won first-place at the Karori Village School, the grammar school she first attended (Nathan 1). This accomplishment encouraged young Beauchamp to continue on writing. After attending grammar school, Kathleen went on to attend Miss Swainson's Secondary School. During this time, she is acquainted with Maata Mahupuka, a native Maori. Her interest in Mahupuka later grew into a brief love affair with him (Nathan 1). After graduating from secondary school, Miss Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp left New Zealand. She decided this after thwarting the idea of a career in music. Beauchamp went on to attend London's Queens College and study literature. While in attendance at Queens College, Kathleen made a friend in Ida Baker. Ida Baker, like Beauchamp, was an avid writer. Kathleen gave the pen name Lesley Moore to Ida, after Beauchamp's brother Lesley (Sampson 308). In the spring of 1907, Miss Beauchamp held in garden party and invited many of her acquaintances from college. The party was a complete success until it was discovered that a cottager who lived on the property had been accidentally killed (Nathan 1). This event spawned to become The Garden Party, Beauchamp's first major work (Encarta). In 1909, Kathleen Beauchamp became acquainted with a man by the name of G. C. Bowden. After only a brief period they became engaged and married. The evening after their marriage, Kathleen left Bowden (Disc. Authors 1). Leaving Bowden, she ran away with her longtime friend Garnet Trowell. Trowell was from Wellington; she was a fairly well known cellist. While running away with Garnet Trowell, Kathleen had an affair with a man who ultimately impregnates her. When Kathleen finally discovered this pregnancy, she returned to her mother for support. Trying to remove Kathleen from the distractions of everyday life, Kathleen's mother took her to Bad Worishofen, Bavaria to await the pregnancy (Nathan 1). In June of 1909, Kathleen had a miscarriage. While awaiting the birth of her child, Kathleen wrote stories and drew sketches related to her experiences of Bavaria (Disc. Authors 1). She wrote most of her work in her room at the Hotel Kreuzer (Nathan 1). After battling through difficult times, Beauchamp made many changes in her life. Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp began using the name Katherine Mansfield exclusively starting in 1910 (Nathan 1). Steven Swift, a fairly well known publisher at the time, published the first copies of Mansfield's In a German Pension (Baugh 287). It was originally advertised as a six-schilling novel (Baugh 287). Only a short time after the initial publication, Swift added the work onto his list of Books that Compel (Sampson 308). During this time, Katherine Mansfield made an acquaintance with an important person. J. Middleton Murry was the editor of Rhyme magazine. Katherine met Murry for the first time when he was twenty-two while working in the same town (Nathan 1). J. Middleton Murry and Katherine Mansfield became closer and their personal relationship grew. Eventually, Murry moved in with Katherine at her London apartment and they soon became lovers. John Middleton Murry and Katherine Beauchamp Mansfield were married on May 3, 1918. This move was made in an act of convenience as well as love, considering Murry was an editor of a magazine that also published short stories. After her marriage to Murry in May of 1918, Katherine went right back to work. In August of the same year, she published the short story Bliss in the English Review (Nathan 1). In

Bioethanol, a Potential Fuel Revolution

Bioethanol, a Potential Fuel Revolution Simply put, bioethanol is ethanol (alcohol) that is derived exclusively from the fermentation of plant starches. Though ethanol can be extracted as a byproduct from a chemical reaction with ethylene and other petroleum products, these sources are not considered renewable and therefore disqualify most ethanol from being considered bioethanol. Chemically, bioethanol is identical to ethanol and can be represented by either the formula C2H6O or C2H5OH. Really, bioethanol is a marketing term for the products that do not have immediate harm to the environment through burning and use of natural gas. It can be fermented from sugar cane, switchgrass, grains, and agricultural waste.   Environmental Benefits All fuel combustion- regardless of how eco-friendly it is- generates dangerous emissions that harm the earths atmosphere. However, the burning of ethanol, especially bioethanol, has far fewer emissions than gasoline or coal. For that reason, the burning of bioethanol, especially in vehicles that can use fuels derived from them, is much better for the environment than some other alternative fuel sources.   Ethanol, in general, reduces greenhouse emissions by up to 46% compared to gasoline, and the added bonus of bioethanol not relying on harmful chemical processing means it further minimizes the harmful effects of gasoline use. According to the United States Energy Information Administration,  unlike gasoline, pure ethanol is non-toxic and biodegradable, and it quickly breaks down into harmless substances if spilled. Still, no fuel combustion is good for the environment, but if you must drive a car for work or pleasure, perhaps consider switching to a flex-fuel vehicle capable of processing ethanol-gasoline blends. Other Types of Biofuel Biofuels can be broken down into five types: bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, biobutanol, and biohydrogen. Like bioethanol, biodiesel is derived from plant matter. Specifically, the fatty acids in vegetable oils are used to create a powerful substitute through a process known as transesterification. In fact, McDonalds now converts much of its vegetable oil to biodiesel to reduce their companys large carbon footprint. Cows actually produce methane in such large amounts in their burps that theyre one of the largest contributors to emissions in the natural world- impacted significantly by commercial farming. Methane is a type of biogas which is produced during digestion of biomass or the burning of wood (pyrolysis). Sewage and manure can also be used to create biogas! Biobutanol and biohydrogen  are both yielded through biological means of further breaking down butanol and hydrogen from the same materials as bioethanol and biogas. These fuels are common replacements for their synthetic or chemically engineered, more harmful counterparts.

U03d1 Health Care Perceptions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

U03d1 Health Care Perceptions - Essay Example Second are long term debts, where the maturity of the debt is longer than one year. Both these debts are equally risky as well as have the advantages and disadvantages (Zelman, McCue, & Glick, 2009). Considering the long term debts, it is essential to note that there are two primary models that are present, one where the debt is a term loan and second where the debt is a public offering mostly in the form of bonds. The health care industry has a mixture of debts which can be used to meet the needs of an optimal investment; it is essential to note that a more diversified portfolio proves to be very beneficial for the industry and can in a number of ways increase the anticipation of an investment. It is also important to note that the investments are not always accurate and the growth is not easily measurable. In the case of banks, it is possible to determine the financial situation using the debt to equity ratio, however considering the health care industry this can be a little risky and the outcome and overall organization can be difficult to manage. There is a high level of risk that is involved in the risk of borrowing and debt when compared to the risk of equity. Also as explained by Moore (2009), there is a high level of interest rates that need to be considered and these have to a great extent impacted a number of people across the world, leaving them defaulting on the loans. Considering the health care industry and the consumers, it is definite that the hospital finances are not found. Also considering the hospitals, it is important to note that the debt related issues is a very unconventional problem. The chances for the health care industry to be faced with high levels of debt ratio (Abel, et.al., 2009). There are a number of different opinions and ideas that the customers have about the financial condition of the health care industry and the consumers in most cases will not get a true peek into the financial condition of the organizations.

The Peloponnesian War Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Peloponnesian War - Essay Example Eventually these two city-states became two power centers of Greece and indulged into a battle of supremacy against each other. This war between Athens and Sparta was known as the Peloponnesian war. The importance of the present study lies in the fact that as one of the ancient modern civilizations; studying the history of Greece has always been a privilege. Furthermore the Peloponnesian war was one of the very first kinds of civil war that led to massive alterations in nature of politics in Greece. The Peloponnesian war eventually led to the alteration of leadership of Greece, replacing Athens with Sparta as the most powerful Greek city-state. The background of the Peloponnesian war was a culmination of events that hovered around jealousy, insecurity and hunger for power. During the Greco-Persian war Athens and Sparta fought side by side. In the initial stages of the war role of Sparta was much more prominent (480 BC to 479 BC) than that of Athens and Sparta became the leader of the Hellenic League. (Fine, 332) Sparta was mainly a land-based power depending on its infantry for military success. (Thucydides, Hammond and Rhodes; IX) It was never that powerful in terms of naval power. While powerful Spartan infantry was more than sufficient to lead the Hellenic League against Persians on land and to drive them away from Greek soil, it was impossible for them to maintain the success in Persian territories of Asia and Aegean. A naval leadership soon became inevitable for such campaign against Persia in Asia and Aegean and in such circumstances Athens that was primarily a naval power came in the forefront (478 BC). This event m arked the initiation of rise of Athens as the prime Greek city-state ahead of Sparta. Again according to some scholars the Hellenic League at this point was subdivided in two parts. The Naval wing of Hellenic League became Delian League and it was headed by Athens. The land wing of Hellenic League went under Sparta and became known

Jehovah Witness Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Jehovah Witness - Essay Example Founded in the year 1874, the teachings and beliefs on the church Adventist theological teachings were adopted into the Watchtowers teachings (Garraty and Carnes, 92), and has two magazine publications the WATCHTOWER and the AWAKE! (King, 443). The bible used by the Jehovah witness is known as the- new world translation, this bible version is different from other bibles in two different verses, John 1:1; 8:58 and Hebrews 1:8, though there are other different passages that have been adopted to support Jehovah Witnesses doctrines. Jehovah witness is a Christian sect with distinctive religious practices and rituals that appear to be dissimilar to other Christian churches and organizations; therefore, this paper therefore explores the practices of this Christian sect in comparison to the Baptist church in south Florida. This is a very controversial and aggressive religious group in south Florida, which bans pursuit of higher education amongst their members, and instead encourages evangel istic activities. In addition, the group only allows marriages amongst fellow members of the group and practices door to door campaign of their teachings and amongst the members, and it is only the younger members of the group who do a lot of this work. Jehovah witness is also known as the Watchtower Society has the following theological beliefs, practices and rituals such as they ban their members from celebrating any holidays and birthdays. Their members are banned from taking part in flag salutes, engaging in civil duties, participating in politics or engaging in war like activities. Furthermore, members are not allowed to transfuse blood, allowed to make minimal contact with people, who are non members of Jehovah Witness, even if it is their family and friends and also avoid contact with former members of the sect. Members of the Society are also not allowed to pursue higher education or limited pursuit of higher education; they outlaw critical thinking and arguments. Literature materials which are written by members are banned if such pieces of materials are deemed as being critical of the society or if the materials paint the society in a bad light. Non members of the Jehovah Witness religious group are banned from attending churches sermons and prayers, in addition, the members are not allowed to undertake religious broadcasting, instead they have to perform house to house proselytizing (Gruss 296). Comparison between Jehovah witness and the Baptist church in south Florida Jehovah witness in south Florida inserted the name Jehovah to replace the word God, and that Jehovah alone is the Father. Conversely, in other mainstream churches such the Baptist they draw their beliefs form the Roman Catholic of the Holy Trinity- the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Secondly, the Watchtower believes that Jesus is the created Archangel whereas the Baptist believes that Jesus is not a creation, He is the most high- the Almost God. In the scriptures of the Baptist bible, this is proclaimed in Revelation 1:7-8, 17, 18, 2:8, 22:12-13, 20 Isaiah 9:6; 44:24, 48:12 John 1:3 Hebrews7:3 and John 1:3. Jehovah Witness believes that it is Jehovah who raised Jesus from death in a form that is angelic and without the human body. Baptist’s on the other hand believe that on the third day after his death, he resurrected from the dead in a physical human form, shown in the books of Luke 24:39 Acts 17:31, John 2:18-22 and Philippians 2:5-11. Jehovah Witness believe that the Holy Spirit is a servant of God and the Holy Spiri

The Monkeys Paw, WW Jacobs

The Monkeys Paw, WW Jacobs William Wymark Jacobs, a British humorist best known for The Monkeys Paw, was born on September 8, 1863 in London, England. His father, William Gage Jacobs (www.nndb.com), managed a South Devon wharf, and Jacobs and his brothers spent much time there. After attending Birkbeck College, Jacobs became a clerk in civil service in 1879, a job that he hated (www.enotes.com). From 1883 to 1899 he worked in the savings bank department. A regular income was a welcomed change from his childhood of financial hardship. (www.online-literature.com) He started submitting sketches to Blackfriars in 1885. Many Cargoes was the W.W. Jacobs first collection of short stories in 1896. In 1897, The Skippers Wooing was written and in 1898 Jacobs wrote another collection of stories, Sea Urchins. By 1899 Jacobs was confident enough to resign from the civil service to devote his full time to writing. (www.online-literatre.com) After quitting work he said: It was not until I had been writing for some years for amusement and a little extra pocket-money that I bagan to write of the watersideà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Then the coastwise trips that I had taken in my youth came back to me with all the illusion of the past. Barges, schooners, little steamships and the dingy old wharf at Wapping on which I had lived for four years, took on a new appearance. They came as old friends and helped to push a lazy pen (x The Monkeys Paw and Other Tales of Mystery and of the Macabre) In 1900, Jacobs married Agnes Elanor. They had two sons and three daughters. Jacobs wrote a novel in 1902, At Sunwich Port, and another in 1904, Dialstone Lane. They are said to among his best, displaying exceptional talent to ingeniously devise characters and satirical situations. (www.online-literature.com) In 1902 he wrote a collection of stories that were put together to form The Lady of the Barge. In 1914, W.W. Jacobs wrote his last collection of short stories called Night Watches. In 1931 he published Snug Harbor, a collection of theatrical plays. Even with all his humor writings, W.W Jacobs is still best known for his horror story, The Monkeys Paw. When it came to humor, Jacobs was the best in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Other books by him include A Circular Tour, A Distant Relative, A Tigers Skin, Her Uncle, A Love-Knot, Watch-Dogs, and Breaking a Spell. (www.americanliterature.com) W.W. Jacbos died in Islington, London on September 1, 1943, in a London nursing home. (xii The Monkeys Paw and Other Tales of Mystery and the Macabre) 2. Overview and Summary of The Monkeys Paw The Monkeys Paw was written by W.W. Jacobs in 1902 and was published in his collection of short stories called The Lady of the Barge. The Monkeys Paw is a short horror story, which is unlike his other humor stories written previously. The Monkeys Paw is about a small family of three, the White family that receives a monkeys paw from a family friend, Sergeant-Major Morris, a war-torn man who had just gotten back from India. The Sergeant-Major Morris tells the Whites that it has the ability to grant three men three wishes each. The friend throws the paw into the fire but the Mr. White takes it out and asks if he can have it. After trying to persuade him not to keep it, the Sergeant eventually agrees and says Mr. White can keep it. After a few minutes of thinking of what to wish for, the Mr. White wishes for two hundred pounds. Nothing happens right away except the monkeys paw shakes a bit. After this they dont believe that the Sergeant was telling the truth. The next day some stranger arrives with bad news. He is from Maw and Meggins, the place that the son, Herbert, works at. They tell the Whites that Herbert has died while working at the factory. The guy says hes very sorry and that to compensate for the death they get a small sum of money equal to two hundred pounds, the amount they had wished for earlier. The family is in shock for a weak and dont know what to do. After a week of crying, mourning, and not getting out of bed, Mrs. White tells the father to wish the son back to life. The father does so and a few minutes later there is a knock at the door. The father realizes instantly the state that Herbert would be in since he was caught in the machinery and buried underground for a week. Mrs. White did not think about this when she rushed to the door and she yelled at Mr. White when she tried to get to the door. Mrs. White escapes from her husbands grasp and she rushes for the door. She gets to the door as the son reaches the gate. The gate squeaks open and Mrs. White tries to open the door, but she cannot as the door is locked. She fumbles with the lock and gets it open, but the door is jammed. Meanwhile Mr. White is wishing with the monkeys paw that instead of alive, his son would be at peace. It is at this point where Mrs. White opens the door and finds it empty at the opposite end. The streetlight across the street flickers as a cold rush of wind blows through the house. Such a mysterious ending leaves the reader hanging. (www.helium.com) This short story has been rewritten as a play and other short stories. While The Monkeys Paw was completely different from his great humor stories, it is still the most known of W.W. Jacobs stories and continues to be performed in small theaters throughout the country. 3.1 Infulences The Monkeys Paw is different than most of W.W. Jacobs other short stories and plays because it is a horror story rather than his humorous stories about a wharf and sailors. It is difficult to figure out what influenced him because it is so different from other stories of his and nothing seemed to trigger the change in story genres. Maybe he was just bored with humor, or maybe he somehow thought it was still humor, but no one seems to know why he changed. In other stories his influences were mostly his father and the Wharf. Since he was always around the wharf, he eventually wrote fiction humor stories about sailors and the ocean. Growing up in a poor also influenced how he wrote, letting him give more life to the characters in his stories. This [The Monkeys Paw] tale, it has been said, of superstition and terror unfolding within a realistic setting of domestic warmth and coziness, is an example of Jacobs ability to combine everyday life and gentle humor with exotic adventure and dread.' (xi The Monkeys Paw and Other Tales of Mystery and the Macabre) The Monkeys Paw may be different from his other short stories, but it seems after W.W. Jacobs wrote it, he started writing more like it. His inspiration for writing it is still unknown to many people, but it is still a highly recognized short story. 3.2. Main Themes One of the themes in The Monkeys Paw is being careful of what you wish for. This is evident when the first wish was made, while it was made with some thought, the Whites did not think about the possible consequences. The consequence of wishing for a couple hundred pounds was beyond what they could imagine. They did not think that their son could die because of such a small amount of money. When they were making their second wish they did not think about it at all and they made the wish in too quickly and with a lot of emotion. By bringing their son back to life they brought a zombie-like person who was deformed beyond repair. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Making one seemingly harmless wish only intensifies and magnifies desire as each subsequent wish becomes more and more outlandish (www.sparknotes.com). The message that this theme says is that you must think about what you wish for and the consequences before you make a wish. Another theme in The Monkeys Paw is dont be curious. Since Mr. White was curious about the monkeys paw, the Sergeant gave him the paw. If he hadnt been curious about the paw, nothing would have happened. The message that is displayed with this theme is that being curious can get you into trouble and harm you. The last theme in The Monkeys Paw is that greed and selfishness can destroy your life. Since the Whites were greedy, they wished for the money and only thought of themselves when they made their first two wishes. These two wishes did not turn out well because of their intentions. The third wish was made selflessly and had a better outcome than that of the other two. 3.3. Stylistic Devices Jacobs uses foreshadowing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦in this story [The Monkeys Paw] to explore the consequences of tempting fate (www.enotes.com). W.W. Jacobs successfully adds depth and even excitement to his story by injecting suspense and mystery at almost every turn. (www.helium.com) An example of the use of foreshadowing in this story is when the Sergeant warns the Whites about the monkeys paw and warns them not to use it. This example foreshadows a future event where, if it is used, the monkeys paw will cause a problem. Another example is when the weather suddenly changes when the body of the son comes back to life and is coming home. This example warns that something is wrong. The solemn expression on the strangers face when he tells Mr. and Mrs. White about the death of their son foreshadows that he brings bad news. One of the most suspenseful moments in the story is when the corpse of Herbert is knocking at the door and Mrs. White cannot open it. By letting the readers think that he is a corpse, it makes them want to know if she can get it open or not before Mr. White can wish Herbert to be at peace. A time of mystery is when the Sergeant brings the monkeys paw and doesnt describe the evil it brings in detail. By doing this the Sergeant leaves the readers wondering what will happen if the Whites use the monkeys paw. Throughout the story these stylistic devices are evident and make the story more interesting. 3.4 Characters In this short story you dont get to know the characters well because of the short period of time it takes place in and the dryness of the characters and the lack of characterization. (www.helium.com) The main Characters of the story are the Whites. The Whites seem to be an everyday family that seems to get along well. They spend a lot of time together and It seems like the only one who has a job is Herbert White, who works at Maw and Meggins. What he does there is unknown, other than the fact that there is machinery. He is the only member of the family who works, so readers can assume that he supports his parents in their old age. (www.SparkNotes.com) He does not believe the power of the monkeys paw at all, and treats it like a joke. Mrs. White seems to be a caring mother who loves her son, and cant stand to be without him. She is far less credulous than her husband. (www.SparkNotes.com) Mr. White sees the wrong in his greediness at the beginning of the story and later tries to make up for it by wish[ing] the unwanted visitor away with his third wish may reflect his desire to not only save his and Mrs. Whites lives, but also redeem himself for his sins. (www.SparkNotes.com) Sergeant-Major Morris has spent twenty years in India before he visited the Whites. He is an old family friend of the Whites. He uses trickery to get the Whites to take the monkeys paw. From that I consider him to be intelligent, but not worrying about the Whites much anymore. 4. Test 1. What does the W.W. in W.W. The War between Fox News Channel and Obama

The war between Fox News Channel and Obama began when Obama’s administration fired back against Fox, saying that Fox is ‘biased’ and not a ‘real news station’. Rahm Emanuel, the chief staff of president Obama said, â€Å"It is not a news organization so much as it has a perspective†. This dispute sparked controversial arguments from the public regarding the president’s decision to attack Fox channel. This also brings our attention to the news reporting channels like Fox and MSNBC. Are they really reliable? Are they ‘reporting’ the news, or simply giving their biased opinions? First of all, I do not think it is a good move for Obama and the White House to attack Fox news. For a president to attack a cable network is a very odd move to make because they are at a different status and levels in our society. Even though Obama’s claims might be true, I still feel that it is a bit arrogant to attack a person or organization that does not hold as much power as you. Furthermore, Obama is actually helping Fox’s ratings go up. Fox is receiving free publicity because the famous saying, ‘any publicity is good publicity’ is true. The public quarrel between Fox and the president brings up another concern and issue in journalism: the accuracy and quality of news reporting. Since I only moved to Boston a few months ago, I am not very familiar with the US news channels. I decided to compare Fox and MSNBC to see which network is less opinionated and biased. After a bit of research, I discovered that Fox is more conservative, and MSNBC is more liberal, however, both networks offer news and commentary. Their news stories are all very opinionated and their opinions are often influenced by their beliefs and values. This type of reporting is not ‘true’ reporting. Hopefully, people watch the Fox to be entertained, rather to be informed. True journalism should report both sides of the story, allowing readers themselves to feel what is right and what is wrong. Journalism should be a report of unbiased facts. Fox, MSNBC, and many other news networks will continue to be biased and opinionated in their news reports. What we can do as viewers, in attempt to avoid media bias, is to branch out and listen to a variety of news outlets, to learn to be well rounded in where we get our news.
